” Chicagoan Sarah Marie Young is one of those natural talents you know can go in any direction she chooses. If she wants to follow the path of the classic jazz singers, she has the skill and sophistication to do that, as witness her one-woman tribute to Sarah Vaughan, “Sarah Sings Sarah,” and her prize-winning rendition of “Fascinating Rhythm” at the Montreux Jazz Competition. If she wants to pursue a career as a pop-soul singer and also show off her prowess at the piano, a la Alicia Keys, she has the chops to make that happen. She does a strong version of Ashford and Simpson’s “You’re All I Need to Get By.”
Whatever style or styles she embraces, she will be served by her appealing stage presence. Tonight, she will accompany herself on ukulele, an instrument that has been making a comeback lately (New York jazz and cabaret singer Nellie McKay played it on her Doris Day tribute album). With guest vocalist Saalik Ziyad, her Chicago Jazz Duets series partner, Young will sing “Teach Me Tonight.” We can also expect songs from her soulful new album, Too Many Februaries. Young’s band will include pianist Stuart Mindeman, bassist Patrick Mulcahy and drummer Makaya McCraven.”
