George Flynn – composer and pianist

"Of his peers, only Cecil Taylor and Frederic Rzewski have created works which are of an equally impressive scale, as copiously detailed, technically challenging, and passionately expressive…"

- on George Flynn from A Fickle Sonance, a column by Art Lange in the online music journal Point of Departure.

George Flynn chaired Musicianship and Composition at DePaul University (Chicago) for 25 years.  He has composed over 100 works in all media, including over five hours of piano solo music.  His music is performed internationally, and has appeared on several recordings, including four recent CD’s on the Southport Composers label.  As a pianist, Flynn has performed and recorded new music for many years throughout the US and Europe.

Willie Pickens – pianist

“It takes a lifetime to learn how to construct such an essay in sound, and we’re fortunate that Pickens is here to show us how it’s done.”

- Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune

Not long after receiving his teacher’s certificate from the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music and his B.S. in Music Education at the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee, Willie Pickens moved to Chicago and began his career on a national hit record – Eddie Harris’ 1961 Exodus.  After a period of performing, recording and teaching in Chicago, Willie was invited to join the Elvin Jones Jazz Machine in 1990.  Since then, Pickens has performed and recorded internationally (with four Southport CDs in his discography), continues to teach as part of the Ravinia/Chicago Public Schools Jazz Mentors Program, and is an adjunct faculty member at Northern Illinois University.

Southport Records presents an ongoing series of events at Katerina’s on the first Saturday of every month!  Label partners Bradley Parker-Sparrow, piano and Joanie Pallatto, voice will open each set with their original duets and improvisations.  Southport Records will present a mix of artists from the label roster, featuring jazz, avant garde, classical, world and new music.  The co-host of this event, Katerina’s, has evolved into a unique listening experience and environment, with fine programming, including jazz, world, and pop forms. As always, Katerina’s serves great cocktails and fine food!  Katerina’s – an eclectic club with its soul in the arts.
