Max ZT – Hammered Dulcimer and Composer
After hearing the hammered dulcimer at a Chicago area folk festival at the age of six, Max ZT was hooked. He studied under Kat Eggleston for 10 years before venturing to Bard College in upstate New York. Several years in to his college studies, Max traveled to Senegal, West Africa, to study the Mandinko technique with the Cissoko griot family. He has returned for a total of 3 trips to Senegal.
Max now resides and works in Brooklyn, New York. He has put out 5 CD’s with each being quite different from the other. His first CD, “Too Heavy To Carry” was recorded for Southport Records when he was 16 years old! He has won the National Hammered Dulcimer Championship and works with scores of national and international artists. He has shared the stage with such luminaries as Bon Jovi, Jimmy Cliff, KODO, and Ravi Shankar.
In the winter of 2009, Max began the first leg of his nine month grant in Mumbai, India. This grant, made possible by the American Institute of India Studies, allowed Max to study the Indian form of the dulcimer – the santoor – with master Pandit Shivkumar Sharma. He is now back in the states for a few months, but will return to Mumbai in July to continue his studies with Panditji.
Max ZT will be appearing with his eclectic band, House of Waters on Friday, June 11, 2010, 8:00 pm, at the Old Town School of Folk Music, 4544 N. Lincoln, Chicago, IL. House of Waters is: Max ZT-hammered dulcimer, Moto Fukushima-bass and Luke Notary-percussion. Full info. & to order tix: this link.
